Great experience. We spent a week in this lovely campervan. We also took the van on the ferry to the nearby island of São Jorge. This island is also very beautiful and has many great places to stay overnight, but the road infrastructure is more challenging compared to Pico. Some tips for future travelers: Don’t panic — you’ll always find sanitary facilities. Search on Google for “Piscinas naturais.” These are wonderful spots to take a refreshing swim in the ocean, and you’ll almost always find a free shower and toilet there. Expect cold showers, but they were always clean. We did the hike from Casa da Montanha up Mount Pico. We booked it early and also slept in the parking lot that night. Technically, this is a nature reserve, so camping is forbidden, but the staff tolerate it. There are also toilets available. (Quietest night and a stunning sunset!) Along the roads and by the sea, you’ll find plenty of barbecues. Often, there’s also wood available for use. People are genuinely happy to see you and are often surprised by the camper. Everyone is super friendly :-) We took a day trip on the ferry to Faial and explored the island by (e-)bike. Our tips for overnight spots: The van is a classic old-timer. Be aware that it comes with some wear and quirks, but that only adds to its charm. Near Lajes: 38°23'49.6"N 28°11'51.7"W (quiet village, Ribeiras, with a free swimming pool nearby) Search “Bar a Formosinha” on Google. Beautiful view and a toilet available. Search “Ermida de São Mateus da Costa” on Google. A lovely little church with a large area next to it where you can sleep peacefully with the sound of the waves in the background. Nearby, there’s a piscina where you can use the sanitary facilities. Casa da Montanha, as mentioned above. São Jorge: Porto da Ribeira do Nabo. Great outdoor shower and sanitary facilities by the sea. São Jorge: Camping Calheta (near Piscinas Naturais Fajã Grande), where for €7 you can take a HOT shower, use a washing machine, and enjoy a beautiful bay to swim and fully relax.
